INTERN – EAST AFRICA TAX AND GOVERNANCE NETWORK (EATGN)

Contract duration:          6 months with a possibility to extension to a maximum of one year

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR THE INTERNSHIP POSITION

Founded in 2011, the East African Tax and Governance Network (EATGN) is a civil society collaborative initiative of individuals and non-state actor institutions in the East Africa Community (EAC) that share the understanding that taxation is fundamental in achieving social justice and development goals.

EATGN champions for tax justice in governance, through public policy advocacy, research, and capacity building to create links between various constituencies in the region to improve tax policy while deepening democratic governance. EATGN is seeking a highly qualified, curious, talented and research-savvy individuals (graduates/graduate students) to join a dynamic team in Nairobi a support for an expanded program on research and analysis in public policy for 6 months to a year.

This offer is an opportunity to acquire direct practical experience on taxation and more broadly in areas of international development. This is a great opportunity to learn and work in tax justice advocacy in a growing regional membership development organisation. The intern will report to the Coordinator, working closely with policy research and communication teams.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

EATGN is seeking a dedicated, dynamic and proactive intern, with strong interest in taxation and international development. The intern will be expected to be flexible and work on multiple tasks with varying deadlines. The selected candidate will be assisting the EATGN Coordinator with the following key duties:

  1. Institutional building and strategic planning
  2. Project implementation
  3. Monitoring and evaluation
  4. Reporting
  5. Fundraising and grant management
  6. Contract management
  7. Networking (Representation and participation)
  8. Relationship Management
  9. Campaigns and information sharing
  10. Research and policy advocacy
  11. Communications
  12. Partner Collaboration

More specifically

  • Technical
    1. Support sourcing of development data – from national, regional, and global databases;
    2. Participate in field based primary data collection when needed;
  • Conduct desk reviews of existing research and literature;
  1. Conduct qualitative and quantitative data analyses;
  2. Participate in drafting of reports, papers, policy briefs, and other knowledge products;
  3. Provide overall support for research assignments/projects;
  • Support organisation and coordination of knowledge brokering forums – colloquiums, roundtables, conferences, workshops etc.;
  • Proofread and contribute to regular blogs, op-eds, and website content.
  • Administrative
    1. Execute administrative project management tasks related to project plans, budgets, deliverables, and documentation;
    2. Support coordination of project related events;
  • Support development of proposals and management of membership needs in streams of work;
  1. Support maintenance of project management systems including data management and filing;
  2. Organise and maintain project related diaries and ensure relevant administrative preparations for meetings are made.

DESIRED QUALITIES

  • Academic Qualifications
    1. Be enrolled in an undergraduate school programme in any of the following fields: Law, Economics, Statistics, Political Science; Communications, Development Studies and International Relations and Development Studies
  • Knowledge and Technical Competencies
    1. Skills in Microsoft Office;
    2. Demonstrated analytical capability an interest in applied research and technical writing;
  • Resourcefulness in finding information and conducting internet-based research and;
  1. Conversance with political economy issues in Africa
  • Personal Skills
    1. Excellent written and spoken English;
    2. Highly organised and able to prioritise workload effectively;
  • Fast learner with the ability to manage high volume of work;
